MAYS is more than a jade jewellery store. It is a family gemstone story that began in Myanmar and continues today in Australia through authenticity, education, and a deep respect for jade’s cultural meaning.

MAYS began long before it arrived in Australia.

Its story traces back to Myanmar, where Daw May Win, mother of MAYS founder Wai Yan, began the family’s business journey through Navarat, a textile house built on craftsmanship, precision, and artistry.

Our History

Over time, the family’s path evolved from textiles into gemstone jewellery, laying the foundation for a multi-generational legacy that continues through MAYS today.

From fabric and tailoring to jade and gemstones, the values remained the same: care, detail, honesty, and trust.

1979 to 1991

Our Humble Beginnings

Beginning in Myanmar, the family’s journey started with Navarat, a tailoring and textile house built on craftsmanship, precision, and artistry. These early values would later shape the way MAYS approaches jewellery, gemstones, and customer care.
1992

From Textiles to Gemstones

Navarat evolved from textiles into Nine Special Gems Jewellery. With one of Myanmar’s early gem trading licences, Licence No. 77, the family entered the regulated gemstone trade and opened their first store in the historic Scott Market. This marked the beginning of the family’s deeper journey into jade, gemstones, and fine jewellery.
1995 to 2002

Expansion Across Myanmar

Nine Special Gems grew across Yangon and Mandalay, becoming known for quality, trust, and lasting customer relationships. This period strengthened the family’s reputation in gemstone jewellery and deepened their experience in sourcing, selecting, and serving customers with care.
2016

MAYS Arrives in Australia

Wai Yan established MAYS in Melbourne in honour of his mother, Daw May Win, carrying the family legacy into a new generation. The opening of the first South Yarra store marked the beginning of MAYS’ journey in Australia, bringing Myanmar gemstone heritage to a new community of jewellery and jade lovers.
2017

MAYS Launches Online

MAYS expanded its digital presence with the launch of its first website, making its jade and gemstone jewellery accessible to customers beyond Melbourne. This allowed MAYS to reach customers across Australia and internationally, while continuing to share knowledge, guidance, and trust online.
2018 to 2020

Growth and Recognition

MAYS continued to grow its professional presence through mays.com.au and strengthened its gemmological foundations through Wai’s FGAA and GIA affiliations. This period reflected MAYS’ ongoing commitment to gemstone knowledge, industry standards, and customer confidence.
2021

Industry Accreditation

MAYS joined the Jewellers Association of Australia, reinforcing its commitment to transparency, ethical conduct, and professional jewellery standards. For MAYS, trust has always been central to the customer experience, from sourcing and selection to education and aftercare.
2025

A New Melbourne Showroom

MAYS opened its dedicated Ferntree Gully showroom, creating a permanent home for the brand in Australia.The showroom was designed to offer customers a more personal jade experience, where they can view pieces in person, compare colours, understand quality, and receive tailored guidance from the MAYS team.

As the founder of MAYS, Wai Yan brings together family heritage, gemmological training, and years of experience in the gemstone industry.

Growing up around his family’s jewellery business in Myanmar, Wai developed a deep appreciation for gemstones, craftsmanship, and the trust required when helping customers choose meaningful pieces.

Today, he continues that legacy in Melbourne, guiding customers through jade quality, authenticity, colour, symbolism, and fit.
